Things not going quite right

I find it quite interesting when you make mistakes. Or things don’t go quite right.

I had the strobes at 1/2 power in shoot through umbrellas rather than my usual 1/4 power. And while this made the general lighting much much better, it also meant that recycle times took a little longer than I anticipated. Which then meant that sometimes the strobes didn’t fire.

I almost skipped over this shot in post production. I’m glad I didn’t. I really like it (after twiddling with it).

ISO 400 17mm f/7.1 1/100sec. Shot in raw.
sb24 1/2 power camera left with shoot through umbrella triggered via pov wizard, sb26 slave 1/2 power camera right shooting through an umbrella slave, and bare sb26 at 85mm on the floor pointing up at the ceiling. Note the strobes did not fire!!

Post production:
exposure +2.31
and bumped up the Lights in curves

New School Shows page

I have added a new School Shows page to my website. http://scotthone.com/scott/School_Shows.html.

On a side thought, I find it quite fascinating creating webpages and websites. Namely because it is such a dynamic process. If you are not updating it at least every week, it is amazing how it suddenly becomes out of date.

As well, your tastes change. So what was once a great and fantastic layout suddenly becomes a bit bland and dated. You realise the pictures can be closer together, the text can be slightly larger. Some of the text is unnecessary.

And you realise how much spice a touch, and I mean a touch, of colour can add.

Oh, and one last thing; I received some feedback about the Brighton Beach Primary School show. The principal could not stop raving about me! Now that’s pretty cool.

Photography tips

In my daily read of RSS feeds, I was skimming through the comments of this post over at the Digital Photography School. I felt a particular fondness of this particular comment from reader Niels Henriksen:

The best ever photo tip does change with time as we learn new skills and techniques. What is best one time may be just basic knowledge latter on.

The best tip I received very early on in my photography learning journey was when shooting an image examine the 4 corners and make sure they are ok.

This is the one thing that I tell everyone just starting out in photography. The compositional rules can come later.

Bt this I mean that there is nothing in the corners of the viewfinder that is distracting form the central subject. For most of us it is relatively easily to focus on the main subject and to find an interesting perspective to capture what we find interesting, but we tend to be so focused that we may forget to examine the rest of the scene for objects that don’t fit. Bright highlights, disconnected object sticking in. Things that just don’t add to the image.

Mr Winkle the Wizard

I was teaching juggling for Circus Oz at Williamstown today. As I was waiting for Mandy to arrive, sitting on the park bench, I looked over at the little market store and the dude there had just changed into his Wizard costume. I had to ask him for a photo—I thought his costume was fantastic.

And this is Mandy teaching hula

Working in the round

One thing I like about the circus is that the audience is all around you. There is no front, and there is no back. At any one point the audience is seeing you from the front, the side and the back. This is very cool. Comparing this to the stage where there is an obvious front and back—Suddenly your act becomes 3-dimensional.

It is great because you have a clear idea of the audience being all around you.

The kids were great. Which makes my job so much more enjoyable.

What a life. I get to ride a bike. I get to enjoy myself. And I get to help reinforce positive attitudes to the kids. Sometimes I feel pretty special.
